Phoenix Coyotes General Manager, Don Maloney, made the trade for Antoine Vermette on Feb. 22, 2012.  The Columbus Blue Jackets received goaltender Curtis McElhinney, a 2012 2nd round draft pick and a conditional 2013 5th round draft pick.  I’m pretty sure if you asked Don Maloney how he feels about that deal, he would just smile.

Vermette has settled nicely into a second/third line role with the Phoenix Coyotes.  He is a coaches dream as he can move up and down the line-up as needed.  Although he really isn’t a number one center, he doesn’t hurt your team there on a short term basis and is serviceable on both the power-play and the penalty killing units.

He is one of the NHL’s top face-off men and is used in every important face-off  situation for the Coyotes.  Coach Dave Tippett can and does use Antoine Vermette in many line matching situations including a shut-down role.

This year Vermette is putting up some pretty good offensive numbers.  In 38 games, he has 12 goals, 10 assists for 22 points along with a plus/minus of +5  and 18 pims.  Antoine Vermette has already exceeded  his 48 game totals from last year in only 38 games.  I believe the signing of Mike Ribeiro, one of this summers prize Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA’s), might have something to do with it.   Ribeiro’s arrival has created depth and a little more scoring throughout the Coyotes top three lines.

Contract Status:

Antoine Vermette is under contract with the Coyotes until the end on the 2014-15 season when he can become an UFA.  Vermette currently earns $3,750,000 and is a bargain at that price.  Don’t be surprised if he is offered a contract extension before the end of the 2014-15 season.

Like I said earlier, his versatility makes him a coaches dream and probably why GM Don Maloney is still smiling.
