Arizona Coyotes Report Card: Def, Goal, PP & PK

Arizona Coyotes grades for the defence, goaltenders and special teams –

As usual in any hockey season, any given NHL roster is going to have its surprises and it’s disappointments.  The Arizona Coyotes are no exception.  Outside of Devan Dubnyk and Keith Yandle the Arizona Coyotes defence and goaltending have been a major disappointment.

It looks as if Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Keith Yandle have switched jerseys this season.  The Coyotes blue-line as a whole has been inconsistent the whole first quarter of the season but the disturbing thing is that it is somebody different every night.  This group has had good games but rarely all together on the same night. When they do, they win.  Mike Smith has been brilliant on some nights but he is fighting through inconsistent stretches all season to this point.  Devan Dubnyk has been excellent and may begin pushing Smith for starts.

The Arizona Coyotes defence and Mike Smith aren’t solely to blame.  The forwards and overall team defence has been a struggle at times this year.  To say this team isn’t playing “Dave Tippett” hockey would be an understatement.

At the time of this “Report Card”, the Arizona Coyotes record was 8-10-2 and I feel these grades accurately reflect their play … in my opinion.  Please feel free to add your grades or opinions on any player/players you feel I have over-rated or short-changed.  Please feel free to comment below.

I assign two grades; first (hockey grade) is just strictly what you see is what you get and the second (ROI) is weighed against salary or “bang for your buck”.
