Arizona Sundogs vs Denver Cutthroats —  

Arizona Sundogs host games 3 and 4 of their CHL semi-final versus the Denver Cutthroats at Tim’s Toyota Center Tuesday and Thursday night at 6:35 in Prescott Valley, Az.

Team Scope:
Denver:   The Cutthroats jumped out to an early 1-0 series lead against the Arizona Sundogs with a 2-1 win in Game 1 of the best of 7 Conference Finals series.  Special teams play was the story in Game 1 of this series and Denver converted on 2 of their 9 chances with the extra man, while Arizona went 0-4 with the man advantage.  Jean-Phillip Chabot and AJ Gale were both able to convert on two power plays in the second period, with AJ Gale’s power play marker the eventual game winner.  Game 2 was a different story, however, as Denver allowed 3 2nd period goals, which proved to be the difference in the game. The Cutthroats did scored another 2 power play goals in the game and killed all of the Sundogs power play chances, improving their penalty kill to an astonishing 94.3% which leads all playoff teams. 

Arizona:   Arizona failed to solve Kent Patterson in Game 1 as he stopped 28 of the 29 Sundog shots that were fired his way.  Johan Ryd was the only Arizona player who was able to beat Patterson in the game.  Andrew Engelage turned in a solid performance stopping 33 of 35 shots he faced on the night, earning himself the game’s 3rd star.  In Game 2, the Sundogs were finally able to solve Patterson, and scored 4 goals en route to a 4-3 win.  A strong 2nd period was the difference in the game, as Alex Tuckerman, Justin Pender, and Alex Velischek all scored within a 5-minute span.  Velischek’s goal was the eventual game winner and was also his first goal of the 2014 CHL playoffs. 

Who’s Hot:
Denver’s Troy Schwab and AJ Gale are continuing their impressive scoring streak in the 2nd round of the playoffs.  Troy Schwab is 1st in the league in playoff scoring with 13 points in 8 games.  AJ Gale is right behind Schwab with 12 points in 8 games with 2 game winning goals. …Arizona Sundogs David Rutherford is the team’s leading scorer so far in the playoffs and has 10 points in 8 games.  Andrew Engelage has already faced 68 shots in the series and has stopped 93.2% of the shots fired his way.  Defenseman Alex Velischek leads the Sundogs with 2 points in the series in 2 games and also scored the game winner in Game 2 to tie the series at 1-1.
