The ASU Sun Devils Beat SDU 12-1

If there was any concern about how the new recruits would fair in a new division and new team, they were put to rest on Friday night.

Seven of the new Sun Devils tallied at least a point in the 12-1 season opening victory over San Diego State at Oceanside Ice Arena.

Three freshmen scored a goal, with two coming just a goal short of a hat trick.

“They were awesome, they were great,” coach Greg Powers said of his new freshmen. “They are what I knew they were and I think the best is yet to come.”

Sean Murphy came out swinging, scoring two goals in his first 12 minutes wearing maroon and gold.

Jarrod Levos matched Murphy, at least points wise, getting an assist on the first goal of the season and on Murphy’s second.

Chris Burkemper found the back of the net twice in the latter half of the game, with one coming on a highlight-reel pass from Zack Holstrom.

While Holstrom wouldn’t tally a goal, he would record three points on three assists.

Patrick Yudez would be the third freshmen to put one past Aztec goaltender Filip Curkovic.

While he’s not a freshman, it was senior Brett Prechel who would have just as much of a welcoming party.

The senior went down early last season with an injury, and was granted eligibility for 2013 by the ACHA.

He didn’t waste any time taking advantage of his opportunity.

Prechel tallied three points in the third period alone and four on the night — one goal and three assists.

“Usually games like that, you try to get your third and fourth lines out there as much as possible, and tonight, our fourth line was probably our best line,” Powers said. “That’s just how this team is going to be.

“The takeaways are that we’re deep.”
