2018 NHL Entry Draft: Round 1 –

The first round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft was Friday night in Dallas, Texas and the Arizona Coyotes had the 5th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and they selected ….

Barrett Hayton from the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

Analysis:

I don’t think Barrett Hayton was on the Arizona Coyotes radar earlier on in his draft year but his stock had been steadily rising all season long and he reached the Top 10 in North American skaters in April of 2018.  I wouldn’t say the Coyotes went off the board selecting Hayton at #5 but with Filip Zadina still available when it was the Coyotes turn to pick I thought he (Filip Zadina) was a no-brainer.  John Chayka and his crew obviously thought differently and selected Hayton.  Zadina was scooped up by Detroit with the next pick.

Scout Talk:

Barrett Hayton plays a 200 ft game and I guess that makes sense because he tries to emulate Patrice Bergeron’s game.  That’s not a bad player to try and pattern your game after.

Hayton is an average skater.  He has a decent shot and pretty good puck skills.  On the defensive side of the puck he is positionally sound.  He competes hard along the wall and in front of the net.  One of the biggest compliments you can pay a player is to say he is hard to play against and that describes Barrett Hayton.

Final Thought:

I think Barrett Hayton is a stretch as the 5th overall pick but that doesn’t mean he won’t work out for the Arizona Coyotes.  None of the mock drafts had Barrett Hayton at #5 but mock drafts don’t really mean anything.  The only rankings that matter are the ones your scouting staff puts together.  The Yotes got their man and only time will tell if they made the right call although for me not taking Filip Zadina when he was available could be a huge mistake.

UPDATE:

July 6:

Barrett Hayton has signed his three-year entry level contact with the Coyotes.  It carries an AAV of $925,000 per season.
