ASU Sun Devils to face Robert Morris in Tuesday’s National Championship —

Arizona State 4 – Stony Brook 3 —
Stony Brook proved to be a difficult out for Arizona State as the Seawolves carried a 3-2 advantage into the final period of play against the nation’s top team.

The teams traded goals with ASU’s Danny McAuliffe and Ryan Ostertag sandwiching a goal by Stony Brook’s Wes Hawkins through the first 35 minutes of the game.  However, JT Hall and Vincent Lopes scored twice in the final 2:39 of the second period to swing momentum back in Stony Brook’s favor.

Despite falling behind so late in the second period – Lopes’ goal came with just 16 seconds on the clock – it took the ASU Sun Devils only five minutes to tie the contest off the stick of Faiz Khan.  Dave Jantzie would score the game winning goal 10 minutes later elevating the Sun Devils to Tuesday’s National Championship game.

Like their title game foes, the ASU Sun Devils hadn’t allowed a goal through their first two contests of the Tournament and Robert Levin held a nearly identical shutout streak (157:21) as RMU’s Anthony Petrak (156:32) as well as an equally impressive save percentage (.956) although Levin has been tested slightly less than Petrak.

Tuesday’s final will be a showdown of two of the best goaltenders in the tournament.  Both saw their shots surpass 30 for the first time on Monday night and they’ll see a similar number of shots on Tuesday as the nation’s #1 and #3 teams faceoff to determine the 2014 National Champion.
