Dec. 15 Random Notes On Our Yotes

Things about the Arizona Coyotes and the NHL  that crossed my mind this past week –

Some of my thoughts, some info and notes from the past week about our Arizona Coyotes and the National Hockey League.

1.  The Arizona Coyotes played three games last week going 1-1-1 and now have an overall record of 14-14-2.

2.  Welcome back Shane Doan!  Doaner doesn’t put up points like he used to but he sure showed his importance to the team when he returned.

3.  I thought Viktor Tikhonov looked okay between Max Domi and Anthony Duclair the other night versus Carolina.

4.  Martan Hanzal being in the line-up and out of the line-up is getting worrisome for me.  He has missed 134 games since the 2007-08 season.  Is it time to move him?

5.  When you have young players in your line-up you can expect some growing pains but the Coyotes young guys positives definitely far outweigh the negatives. I am much more concerned by some of the bonehead plays coming from our so-called veteran players.  C’MON MAN!

6.  The Coyotes showed a lot of heart on Saturday night versus Carolina in the way they battled and kept climbing back into the game, especially in that third period.  That was a hard earned point.

7.  Pet Peave:  Seeing the lower bowl at Gila River Arena filled with more visiting teams jerseys than Coyotes jerseys.

8.  What’s up with Schmitty?  When did he get injured?

9.  Attendance update:

Minnesota – 14,404

Carolina – 12,668

There was a decent crowd for the Minnesota Wild game on Friday night but a disappointing crowd for the Carolina Hurricanes game on Saturday night AND I don’t want to hear the excuse it was only the Carolina Hurricanes.  That is not a reason for not showing up.  You go to the games to watch the home team and who they are playing shouldn’t matter.  This franchise cannot survive hoping that the visiting team’s fans continue to fill the lower bowl at Gila River Arena.

10.  I like that Dave Tippett isn’t afraid to sit down a player when he isn’t playing well.  Ice-time isn’t a given, it should be earned.

11.  The more I see Stefan Elliott, the more I like him.

12.  I like Tobias Rieder but I don’t think he gets the most out of his skill-set.  He always leaves me wanting more or are my expectations for him too high?

13.  I’m not sure that it’s a good sign that your second leading point producer, Mikkel Boedker at -11, has the worst +/- on the team while the leading scorer, rookie Max Domi is a +2.

14.  Arizona Coyotes special teams update:

PP:  29th at 14.68% … last week …28th at 15.5%

PK:  13th at 81.25% … last week … 13th at 81.40%

15.  Countdown to the 2016 World Cup:  279 days (Sept. 17-Oct. 1 in Toronto).  How many Coyotes do you think will be in this tournament?

Arizona Hockey Talk is looking for Arizona Coyotes, ASU Sun Devils, and local minor hockey writers.  If you or somebody you know is interested, please contact us.
