Dec. 21 Random Notes On Our Yotes

Things about the Arizona Coyotes and the NHL  that crossed my mind this past week –

Some of my thoughts, some info, and notes from the past week about our Arizona Coyotes and the National Hockey League.

1.  The Arizona Coyotes played two games last week going 1-1-0 and now have an overall record of 15-15-2.  They are right in the mix for a playoff spot in the Pacific Division.

2.  After the announcement that Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith will be out for 8-10 weeks with a core muscle injury, I was surprised that they didn’t claim Anton Khudobin off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks.

3.  Congrats to Viktor Tikhonov on his first goal since his return to the Coyotes.

4.  If I told you that the Coyotes scored 5 goals and only gave up 21 shots, how do you think they did in this game?  (they lost 7-5 to Columbus)

5.  Congratulations to Coyotes prospects Brendan Perlini and Dylan Strome on making Team Canada’s WJHC squad.

6.  The Arizona Coyotes sure are a different and better team with Martin Hanzal in the line-up and it really showed on Saturday night versus the New York Islanders.

7.  Congrats to Coyotes goaltender Louis Domingue on his FIRST NHL shutout! Hopefully, the first of many more in the Coyotes net.

8.  Coyotes prospects Christian Dvorak (London Knights, OHL) and Ryan MacInnis (Kitchener Rangers, OHL) have made it through the latest round of cuts for Team USA’s WJHC team.  The final roster must be set by Dec. 24.

9.  Attendance update:

Columbus Blue Jackets – 11,120

New York Islanders – 11,878

There was a horrible turnout for the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night and another brutal crowd on Saturday with a very good New York Islander team in town.  I don’t know what it’s going to take to get people into the seats at Gila River Arena anymore.  Obviously, WITSEC stopped providing tickets to former New Yorkers!   😉

10.  I don’t know that I’ve ever heard Dave Tippett more angry and frustrated in a post-game presser than after the Columbus Blue Jackets game on Thursday night.  He called out everyone except the trainer.

11.  It looks like Connor Murphy got the memo from Dave Tippett.  He’s played pretty well since his “timeout”.

12.  I liked the line combinations Dave Tippett put together for the NYI game.  A healthy Martin Hanzal allows Tipp to set a solid line-up when everybody else is trickled down into their appropriate positions.

13.  Arizona Coyotes special teams update:

PP:  27th at 14.90% up from 29th at 14.68% last week.

PK:  12th at 81.90% up from 13th at 81.25% last week.

14.  Countdown to the 2016 World Cup:  272 days (Sept. 17-Oct. 1 in Toronto).  How many Coyotes do you think will be in this tournament?

15. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of our loyal readers at arizonahockeytalk.com.  Thanks for your support.

LET’S GO YOTES

  1. Agree about the attendance.
Its the only statistic that matters.
Its the elephant in the room.
It’s ludicrous to have these discussions about Corsi/HERO and any other advanced statistic when it’s in relation to nearly an empty arena.
Hopefully, before Mr. Leblanc moves anywhere he will force the hockey fans of the valley to decide whether or not they want an NHL team in the valley by holding a season ticket drive……
The fans here of the sport are complacent because the ownership seems not to care,,,so why should the fan?
They’ll just satay at home and watch the game on TV!
