Jan. 4 Random Notes On Our Yotes

Things about the Arizona Coyotes and the NHL  that crossed my mind this past week –

Some of my thoughts, some info, and notes from the past week about our Arizona Coyotes and the National Hockey League.

Happy New Year to everyone!

1.  The Arizona Coyotes played three games this past week going 1-1-1 and now have an overall record of 18-16-4 and are second in the Pacific Division.

2.  Who is going to be the Coyotes back-up goalie when Mike Smith returns from injury?  Louie Louie is making himself a case for the #2 job or do I dare say the #1 job?  I don’t think Mike Smith has anything to worry about … yet.

3.  Does Martin Hanzal still play for the Yotes?

4.  Gary Bettman and his band of buffoons are the gift that just keep on giving.  Letting this John Scott, All-Star Game fan vote get this far is a BLACK EYE on our game.  AND people wonder why hockey is considered a second or third tier sport in the U.S.  It’s buffoonery like this that will keep a deserving player from being in the All-Star game and it could even be the Yotes OEL or Boeds!

5.  Congrats to Coyotes captain Shane Doan on becoming the franchises leader in goals scored.  Fittingly or ironically, Doaner lit the lamp twice versus the Winnipeg Jets 2.0 Thursday night surpassing Dale Hawerchuk’s 379 goals.

6.  Arizona Coyotes 2015 first round draft pick, Dylan Strome, played very well at the WJHC and I think he will be a regular in the Yotes line-up next season.  The future is so bright I gotta wear shades!

7.  Although he is being overshadowed by the “Double D’s”, Jordan Martinook is quietly having a very nice rookie season.

8.  I don’t want to sound like a broken record but the Yotes need more from Antoine Vermette.  IMO, he has been a bit of a disappointment so far this season after being a big part of this team in previous years.  I thought his Stanley Cup win with the Blackhawks might even elevate his game but it seems to have worked in reverse.  Hopefully, he snaps out of it.

Doan hat-trick

9.  Attendance update:

Chicago Blackhawks – 17,197

Winnipeg Jets – 14,027

The attendance this past week was much better.  It’s a good thing the Chicago and Winnipeg fans travel well.  I look forward to the day when the lower bowl at Gila River Arena has more Coyotes jerseys in the seats than the visiting teams.

10. When Shane Doan scored to break Dale Hawerchuk’s franchise record for goals scored (379), he received a standing ovation from both the Coyotes and Jets fans in attendance.  It was actually a nice scene and I’m glad I was part of it.

11.  Career hat-trick #2 for Shane Doan must have been a little bittersweet for him coming in a 7-5 loss but it didn’t stop fans from giving him a surprise hat-toss after the warm-up the next game (vs Winnipeg).  It actually really surprised him but he had fun with it.

12.  Is it just me or does it look like Zbynek Michalek has lost a step from last season?

13.  Arizona Coyotes special teams update:

PP:  24th at 16.8% up from 28th at 15.7% last week.

PK:  21st at 79.0% down from 18th at 80.3% last week.

14.  Countdown to the 2016 World Cup:  258 days (Sept. 17-Oct. 1 in Toronto).  How many Coyotes do you think will be in this tournament?  Hanzal?  OEL?  Domi?  Duclair?

15. Yes, we all know that it took Shane Doan 1422 games to break Dale Hawerchuk’s record and yes, we all know it only took Ducky 713 games to score his 379 goals.  So what’s your point?

  1. The attendance thing has always gotten to me.
I can’t believe that despite the fact that hockey fans in the area KNOW that it’s the only statistic that is important enough to the team that it can hurt their future, STILL failed to show up.
The Chicago game was disgusting because fans chickened out. Just plain chickened out and left those who did show up…hanging.
That being said, for the 4th time in 4 years I may not show up for the Devils game..
If we are playing the same time as the Cardinals.
That would be a complete MESS.
I just have to admit that..me being a critic of no shows.
