Random Notes On Our Yotes: Oct. 16

Things about the Arizona Coyotes and the NHL  that crossed my mind this past month –

Some of my thoughts, some info, and notes from the past month about our Arizona Coyotes and the National Hockey League.

1.  The Arizona Coyotes played three games last week going 0-3-0 for an overall record of 0-4-1 and are the only winless team in the league.  Yuck!

2.  I’ll be the first to say it.  There is no way the Coyotes would be winless if Dave Tippett was coaching this team.

3.  I know the analytics community frowns on the +/- stat but if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it’s probably a duck AND OEL (minus 9) looks more like a duck than a Norris Trophy candidate.

4.  I wish the Arizona Coyotes were getting solid goaltending like the Calgary Flames.  Too soon?

5.  Is it too early to submit my Christmas wish list for the Coyotes?

6.  To be honest I had no delusions or expectations from this year’s Arizona Coyotes team this season.  It was going to be a developmental season for the kids but the mistakes from the veterans are unacceptable.

7.  I know Clayton Keller is a gifted and skilled player but he needs to increase his compete level and introduce himself to the corners.  Max Domi can’t do all the heavy lifting on that line AND I don’t want to hear … he’s a rookie and he’s just a kid.  There isn’t an age limit on hard work!

8.  I wonder how Jakob Chychrun is progressing from his knee surgery?  He was a nice surprise last season with the way he transitioned from junior hockey in the OHL to pro hockey in the NHL.  He looks like he could be a top pairing defenceman for many years to come.

9.  On a positive OEL note, he has now become the franchise’s all-time leader in PP goals, notching his 41st PP goal on Saturday night vs Boston.

10.  I’ll be honest with you, I was a Dave Tippett guy and I still am.  I don’t like Rick Tocchet and I wasn’t a fan of him being hired.

11.  I don’t know if Dave Tippett ever had as solid a blueline corp to work with like this current Yotes group.  Maybe back in the Keith Yandle, Derek Morris, Adrian Aucoin days.  (see #2)

12.  I know it’s early and it’s a small sample size but I’m afraid Louis Domingue’s current .862 save percentage isn’t quite good enough.  If you were wondering, his career save percentage is .908

13.  Dylan Strome had two assists and was named the third star in his first game with the Roadrunners, a 4-0 win in Bakersfield.

14.  Luke Schenn has really grown on me and I appreciate his game a lot more now than when the Yotes first acquired him.  Is it because the last jersey he wore was a Los Angeles Kings jersey?

15.  Rick Tocchet has a lot to learn in doing his post-game interviews.  He sounds like he is throwing his players under the bus.  That won’t go over very well in the locker room.

16.  I’m re-thinking a couple of my earlier comments.  If this season was a developmental season then what is Dylan Strome doing down in Tucson?  There is no reason why he can’t be playing top-six minutes and on the #1 PP unit with the Coyotes.

17.  Jordan Martinook on the Coyotes PP Saturday night?  I like Marty but he would not be my first choice as a net-front presence.

18.  The Coyotes have a big week ahead of them with a home and home series with the Dallas Stars before hosting the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night.  The Blackhawks are perennial Stanley Cup contenders, and a favorite in the Central Division (alongside Nashville).  For more info on NHL futures, in particular, check out this article >>> https://www.mytopsportsbooks.com/guide/hockey/

19.  Coyotes special teams:

  • PP:  13th at 21.1% … down from 6th last week at 28.6%.
  • PK:  25th at 76.5% … down from 1st last week at 100%.

20.  Attendance:

  • Detroit Red Wings:  Thursday – 13,584 … This is a game that was an automatic sellout in the past no matter which day of the week it was played.
  • Boston Bruins:  Saturday – 14,810 … Saturday night.  An original six team in town.  This should have been a sellout.  I know the Arizona Sun Devils football team were playing at home but this is a big city … excuses, excuses.
