Random Notes On Our Yotes: Oct. 9

Things about the Arizona Coyotes and the NHL  that crossed my mind this past month –

Some of my thoughts, some info, and notes from the past month about our Arizona Coyotes and the National Hockey League.

UPDATE: Oct. 9, 1:30 pm

Dylan Strome has been sent to the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL and The Arizona Coyotes have recalled Mario Kempe.  Probably not a bad move.  Dylan Strome needs “top 6” minutes and first unit powerplay time.  IMO, he won’t be gone long.

1.  The 2017-18 NHL regular season is finally underway and our Arizona Coyotes have started out with an underwhelming 0-1-1 start after two games.

2.  I have to take issue with Coyotes’ tv color man Tyson Nash’s assessment that after years of searching, the Yotes finally got the #1 center they have been looking for.  Yes, he was talking about Derek Stepan.  Let’s be clear, Derek Stepan is NOT a #1 center on any team.  He is a solid center-ice man that plays a 200-foot game and can contribute 50-55 points BUT he is a #2 center at best.

3.  After watching the first couple of Coyotes games it looks like the Yotes will be a fast skating, exciting team, that is going to struggle with “team defence” on a lot of nights.  On paper, they have a very experienced, well-rounded blueline corp but the young forwards are going to be learning how to play “team defence” on-the-fly and it will be a work in progress.

4.  I found it quite puzzling that a team with OEL, Alex Goligoski, and Jason Demers, had rookie Clayton Keller manning the point on the PP.  Maybe and I mean maybe on a 5 on 3 but not now.  He’s better off creating down low.  I actually don’t like this move.

5. The Arizona Coyotes lines in their home game Saturday night vs Vegas also had me shaking my head a bit.  I didn’t like Nick Cousins playing with Dylan Strome.  Cousins would look better with Jordan Martinook and Brad Richardson.

6.  I wonder what a line of Dylan Strome, Max Domi, and Clayton Keller will look like in a couple of years?  I can see them creating havoc in the Pacific Division for many, many years.

7.  The Yotes can thank their new goaltender, Antti Raanta for the point they got Saturday in their 2-1 loss vs the Vegas Golden Knights.  He was very good and had his team within 1:12 of winning this game.

8.  I’m glad to see Zac Rinaldo was where he belongs, in the press box. He is currently serving a 5-game suspension he received will playing with the Boston Bruins last season.  I hope he stays there after his suspension is completed.  What were you thinking John Chayka?

9.  It didn’t take long for ex-Coyote and new Dallas Stars centerman, Martin Hanzal to get injured.  Again.  The man has to be the most fragile human being on earth.  He is a good player if you can keep him in the line-up.

10.   The Vegas Golden Knights aren’t your typical doormat of an expansion team, are they?  They are going to make teams work for every inch of ice in the rink.

11.  After blowing a 4-1 lead in their season opener in Anaheim it looked like the Yotes were going to at least escape with a point or maybe even two BUT Louis Domingue let in an absolute crap goal with 3:30 left in the third period.  Not acceptable.

12.  I know it’s early but it looks like Anthony Duclair has found his mojo again.  He definitely has that jump back in his game.  Let’s hope he doesn’t lose it again.

13.  I’m looking for Christian Dvorak and Brendan Perlini to continue developing.  They look like they could form a very formidable second line.

14.  Christian Fischer still looks a little overmatched at the NHL level but I think he can turn into a solid two-way player with some offensive upside.

15.  I would like to see a little more of Lawson Crouse and maybe every once in awhile in front of the opposition’s net on Coyotes PPs.  Just a thought.

16. For the record, I’m not a fan of having five alternate captains.  I think it would be fair to say that this is OEL’s team so stop pussyfooting around and give him the fricken “C”.

Who should be the next Coyotes captain?

17.  James Neal is still a dick!

18.  Back to Brendan Perlini.  I would love to see the Coyotes use him on his off-wing on the PP.  He probably has the best shot of all Yotes forwards.

19.  Coyotes special teams:

  • PP:  6th at 28.6%.
  • PK:  Tied with 6 other teams for 1st at 100%.

20.  Attendance:

For a game that was supposedly a “sellout” Saturday night there sure were a lot of people disguised as empty seats.

Vegas Golden Knights: 17,125 (sellout)
