Random Notes On Our Yotes: Sept. 1

Things about the Arizona Coyotes and the NHL  that crossed my mind –

Some of my thoughts, some info, and notes about our Arizona Coyotes and the National Hockey League.

After a long hiatus, it’s time for me to get back to work.  A lot has happened since my last piece so I will look back at some of the developments since I last wrote.  WOW, I sure picked a bad time to go for a nap.  Where do I start?

1.  The purchase and relocation process to move the Yotes’ AHL affiliate from Springfield to Tucson was approved by the AHL and they played their inaugural season in the AHL”s Pacific Division last season.

2.  Don Maloney … gone!  John Chayka … in!

The Arizona Coyotes hired analytics guru John Chayka as their Assistant GM and when I woke up from my nap, Don Maloney was ousted and Chayka was named the new GM.  WOW, again.

3.  Dave Tippett … gone!  Rick Tocchet … in!

4.  George Gosbee, Anthony LeBlanc, and the rest of the IceArizona group … gone!  Andrew Barroway … in!

5.  Gila River Arena … out!  New arena in Tempe … in!  I would have loved this.  I would have avoided the logjam at the stack on weeknights.

6.  New arena in Tempe … out!  Gila River Arena … in!  For now.

7.  Alex Goligoski … in!

8.  Mike Smith … gone!  Antti Raanta … in!

9.  Martin Hanzel … gone!  Patrik Stephan … in!

10.  Connor Murphy … gone!  Niklas Hjalmarsson … in!

11.  I’m going to be brutally honest.  I’m not a fan of the Tocchet hiring and if I was being completely honest I don’t know who was a better option but in my humble opinion, Dave Tippett shouldn’t have been let go.  Not yet anyway.  I’m very interested to see how this Barroway/Chayka/Tocchet era does.

12.  Steve Patterson is named the club’s new President and CEO!  His claim to fame is getting arenas and stadiums built.  Good Luck Stevo!  (see #4 and #6)

13.   The Coyotes launched a “Name the Team” contest for their AHL affiliate in Tucson and to absolutely no one’s surprise, the winner was … Tucson Roadrunners!  (see #1)

14.  Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup again … who cares?

15.  Andrew Barroway states that he wants to sever all ties from the Coyotes past and then he lets his GM hire Rick Tocchet!  (see #3)

16.  Radim Vrbata has come and gone again!

17.  Is it just me but doesn’t it seem like our analytics guru of a GM seems to be signing a lot of “character” and “dressing room” guys?  How do you measure that?  Is there a metric for that?

18.  The Arizona Coyotes have a plethora of young exciting prospects that should be knocking on the door this season.  Domi. Duclair, Dvorak, Perlini, and Chychrun could be joined by the likes of Strome and Keller.  This sure looks a lot like Don Maloney’s work?  (see #2)

19.  After years of being a season ticket holder with varying packages and in different sections I’m cutting back this season.  My wife and I have decided to go with the “13-game” package and we picked all 13 games on Saturday nights.  It’s a much easier drive.  I can’t handle the long, slow drive from San Tan Valley to Gila River Arena for weeknight games anymore.  We’ve supported the Yotes the best we could and now it’s time for the younger crowd to pick up the slack.  We’ll be in the lower bowl in section 104, top row.  Stop by and say hi.  (see #5)

20.  Shane Doan was unceremoniously dumped by the Coyotes.  YA, GOOD ONE! The next thing you’re going to tell me is there’s an NHL team in Las Vegas!
