Arizona Coyotes Acquire Sam Gagner and BJ Crombeen from the Tampa Bay Lightning —

A busy weekend in the NHL saw the Arizona Coyotes draft nine players, buyout one player and add two more via the trade route.  GM Don Maloney and his brain trust were certainly busy.

On Friday before the 2014 NHL Entry Draft took place the news of the day for Coyotes fans was that General Manager Don Maloney announced that the Arizona Coyotes were buying out center Mike Ribeiro after only one year of his four year contract.

The Coyotes have initiated a buyout of the remaining three years of Mike Ribeiro’s contract. The buyout is in accordance with the NHL/NHLPA Collecting Bargaining Agreement.

We wish Mike the best of luck in the future and thank him for his contributions with the Coyotes.”

During the course of the day tidbits on Ribeiro’s behavior were talked about on twitter.

Coyotes add Gagner and Crombeen

On Sunday the Arizona Coyotes acquired Sam Gagner and BJ Crombeen from the Tampa Bay Lightning for a sixth round draft pick in 2015.  Gagner was traded ninety minutes early to Tampa Bay from Edmonton for winger Teddy Purcell.  Sam Gagner was drafted in 2007 by the Edmonton Oilers 6th overall and now the Coyotes have quickly filled the void left at center ice with the buyout of Mike Ribeiro forty-eight hours earlier.

The 24 year old Sam Gagner is a 5-foot-11, 202 pound center that has played all seven seasons of his NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers.  His stat line is:  481 games with 101 goals, 194 assists for 295 points with 244 penalty minutes.  Last season (2013-14), Gagner played 67 games with the Oilers registering 10-27-37, 41 penalty minutes and a not so flattering plus/minus of -29.

Also acquired in the Gagner deal was 28 year old BJ Crombeen.  The 6-foot-2, 210 pound Crombeen has played seven seasons in the NHL with Dallas, St. Louis and Tampa Bay and has appeared in 387 games.  His stat line is:  31 goals, 43 assists for 74 points with 771 PIM.  Last season with Tampa Bay, Crombeen played in 55 games registering 3-17-10 and 79 PIM.

From Don Maloney –

“BJ is a great fit for us.  He is a big, strong, character player who will be a leader on the ice and in our locker room.”
