I will be continuing my “look back” at NHL prospects a few years after their draft year and today we are going to look at Phoenix Coyotes defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

I like to pick a current roster player on one of my favorite teams and look back at their post draft projections.  The projections are based on their amateur careers and draft position.  One of my favorite websites for this sort of thing is Hockey’s Future.

Ekman-Larsson played 2 seasons in the Swedish-1 league for Leksands IF.  In his two seasons in Leksand (a men’s league) he posted an impressive 12 goals, 32 assists for a total of 44 points along with 130 PIM and a plus/minus rating of +63 in 81 games.  Let’s see what the guys at Hockey’s Future said.

After Four Years In The NHL

It’s been 4 years since the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s evaluation from the guys at Hockey’s Future was bang on. Their analysis of Ekman-Larsson is not much different from what I see on a night to night basis.

The guys at Hockey’s Future gave him a Prospect Talent Score (PTS) of 8.5 and a Probability Of Success (POS) rating of B. I’d have to think he’s already there and should easily surpass those ratings.

My only critique of his game is that he is not selfish enough with the puck.  OEL has a very good shot and I’d like to see him use it more.

He has a skill-set to be a dominating offensive defenceman like his country-man Erik Karlsson.  He is a decent, but not great defensive player and with a little more work on his defensive game OEL will soon be an All-Star.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson is still growing into his role as an elite defenceman and should be a mainstay on the Coyotes blue-line for many years.

In conclusion it is my opinion that OEL has All-Star and Norris Trophy potential with capabilities to put up consistent 50-60 point seasons.
