Arizona Sundogs Vs Missouri Mavericks Two Game Weekend Series —

Game 1: Mavericks 3 — Sundogs 2 

home openerThe Arizona Sundogs paid a beautiful and heartwarming tribute to the fallen 19 firefighters, tonight during their opening ceremony at Tim’s Toyota Center in front of a crowd of 4,203 fans. The Sundogs fought for a comeback after Missouri posted two goals in the opening frame though they fell short in a 3-2 loss on home ice.

Missouri came out strong and posted the first goal, 9:30 into the first period with a shot from Trevor Kell. Less than six minutes later the Mavericks’ Andrew Courtney collected an unassisted goal. The opening frame was a physical period with 11 of the 19 penalty offenses being accessed. Dave Pszenyczny and Joe Tolles dropped their gloves and were each accessed a five minute major for fighting.

Arizona picked up two goals in the middle frame with a power play goal posted at 10:44 with an assist from Kevin Baker. Sebastian Geoffrion inched the Sundogs closer to tying the game with an unassisted goal with 3:30 remaining in the second period. With neither team able to find the back of the net in the third period John-Scott Dickson’s second period goal for Missouri, 1:55 into the period would prove to be the game winning goal with assists from Kyle Hood and Pszenyczny.

Goaltender Andrew Engelage took the loss for the Sundogs while blocking 22 shots. Arizona outshot Missouri 27-25 and Arizona was the only team to capitalize on the power play 1-5 and Missouri was 0-6 on the power play.

Game 2The Arizona Sundogs were swept by the Missouri Mavericks this weekend when they dropped their second home game at Tim’s Toyota Center in a 4-1 loss after Missouri registered three power play goals.

What should have been a two in a half hour game turned into a three hour game after emotions flared between both teams and resulted in numerous penalties.

Missouri’s Rob Kleebaum opened the game with a power play goal coming at 9:33 into the period after Arizona’s Brodie Zuk was accessed two minutes for tripping. Dave Pszenyczny followed that with their second goal. Missouri registered two 5-on-3 power play goals, by Trevor Kell and Sebastien Thinel both in the third period.

Kevin Baker put the Sundogs on the board with just under five minutes left in the third period with assists from Bryce Reddick and Jordan Clendenning.

Cameron Lanigan took the loss for Arizona making six saves in the first period before relief netminder Andrew Engelage finished the game making 23 saves. Arizona was outshot 33-27 by the Mavericks. Arizona was 0-7 on the power play while Missouri was 3-10 on the power play resulting in their eventual win. 34 penalty offenses were issued tonight and 140 penalty minutes were racked up over three hours.

Sundogs look forward to their three game home series next week when they meet the Rapid City Rush for their first of four match-ups this season.
