Feb. 1 Random Notes On Our Yotes

Things about the Arizona Coyotes and the NHL  that crossed my mind this past week –

Some of my thoughts, some info, and notes from the past week about our Arizona Coyotes and the National Hockey League.

1.  The Arizona Coyotes played two games last week going 1-1-0 and now have an overall record of 24-20-5 at the NHL All-Star break and are currently in a playoff spot in the Pacific Division.

2.  According to Sports Club Stats:  At the All-Star break the Coyotes odds of making the playoffs sit at 38.7%.

3.  Only in Gary Bettman’s NHL can you be suspended for a regular season game for not participating in his useless All-Star weekend … I guess he’s got his priorities straight?

4.  It would have been nice to see OEL at the ASG but he probably enjoyed the rest and time off, especially with the amount of ice-time he logs game in and game out.

5.  The hardest shot in the skills competition is unrealistic because that shot never happens in a game.  A player skating as fast as he can at a stationary puck 30 feet away just doesn’t happen.  It’s fun to watch but not realistic.

6.  So, John Scott pens a thought-provoking article in the “Players Tribune” and a bunch of two-faced journalists, fans, and even haters went all goo-goo for him. John Scott is a bright guy that was put in an awful situation that shouldn’t have happened BUT he should have just said that it wasn’t right and gracefully bowed out.  How does a guy that played in 11 NHL games with 1 assist, that’s not even in the league qualify to play … fan vote or not?  The worst part of this whole story is the guy that let this happen gets a 7-year contract extension.   After some mean spirited fans and the league tried to embarrass John Scott, he had the last laugh and it looks good on him.

7.  Nice touch by the NHL in donating $200,000 to injured hockey player, Denna Laing to assist in her rehabilitation and recovery.  Denna suffered a spinal cord injury on New Year’s Eve while playing in an outdoor game at Gillette Stadium. If you would like to donate to help in her rehab you can do so at dennalaing.org.

8.  I’m sorry but Doc Emerick’s excessive screaming is not my idea of a play by play voice.  IMO, highly overrated.

9.  Attendance update:  No home games last week but I hope Coyotes fans really get behind this team for the stretch run and fill the rink every night.  They deserve it!

10.  Winnipeg Jets pending UFA Andrew Ladd bought a 1967 Corvette roadster at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, AZ this past weekend.  I wonder if Coyotes captain Shane Doan and goaltender Mike Smith that were also at the auction were schmoozing Andrew Ladd and extolling the virtues of life in the desert?

11.  John Scott had his day in the sun and will probably be forgotten in a couple of days.  Like they say, fame is fleeting.

12.  The NHL’s 3 on 3 All-Star Game was probably the most competitive ASG I’ve witnessed in 30 years but the bottom line is 3 on 3 is just another gimmick and it’s not real hockey.  IMO, they should just do away with the game and build in a 3-day mid-season break for the players.

13.  Arizona Coyotes special teams update:

PP:  17th at 17.8% down from 14th at 18.6% last week

PK:  28th at 76.6% marginally up from 28th at 76.4 last week

14.  Countdown to the 2016 NHL Trade Deadline:  29 days (Feb. 29)

15.  Countdown to the 2016 World Cup:  230 days (Sept. 17-Oct. 1 in Toronto). How many Coyotes do you think will be in this tournament?  Hanzal?  OEL? Domi?  Duclair?  Boedker?

16.  Congrats to Louis Domingue for being named NHL “Rookie of the Month” for January.

Arizona Hockey Talk is looking for Arizona Coyotes, ASU Sun Devils, and local minor hockey writers.  If you or somebody you know is interested, please contact us.
