Jan. 25 Random Notes On Our Yotes

Things about the Arizona Coyotes and the NHL  that crossed my mind this past week –

Some of my thoughts, some info, and notes from the past week about our Arizona Coyotes and the National Hockey League.

1.  The Arizona Coyotes played three games last week going 1-2-0 and now have an overall record of 23-19-5 and are in a 3-way tie for third place in the Pacific Division.  They finished what started out to be a very promising homestand with a 3-3-1 record.

2.  According to Sports Club Stats:  After four straight losses by the Coyotes their odds of making the playoffs dropped to 35.5% but after their 3-2 win over the Kings improved to 41.4% and currently sits at 43.7%.

3.  IMO, Jarred Tinordi looked a little shaky in his Coyotes debut versus the L.A. Kings but then again the whole group looked a little out of sorts.  The Kings can do that to you.

4.  How do you explain the Yotes garnering 7 out of 8 points versus the division leading L.A. Kings?

5.  I’m getting tired of Mikkel Boedker’s inconsistent play.  It’s now one goal in his last eighteen games.  It’s the same thing year after year.  No more excuses! Start producing because on July 1st, if not sooner, I’m pretty sure Boedker’s camp is going to be looking for a long-term contract and a hefty pay increase and he should be paid based on production NOT potential.  That ship has sailed.

6.  The way Shane Doan is playing right now any talk of retirement is crazy talk. It sure looks like he is having fun and he is still producing.  I see a two-year contract extension coming this off-season.

7.  It looks like there will be less disposable income in the Glendale/Peoria area with the opening of the new Desert Diamond Casino!  GREAT!  Another reason not to attend Coyotes games.

8.  How’s that Coyotes representative for the All-Star Game coming along Gary?

9.  Attendance update:

Buffalo Sabres – 11,134

San Jose Sharks – 12,251

L.A. Kings – 14,195

The Coyotes had three home games last week and the attendance was a little better.  I would have expected more when two of the games were against divisional rivals and especially with Thursday’s game versus the Sharks being “Shane Doan 380 night”.

10.  It looks like the Coyotes are going to give Christian Thomas a look this week on their two-game road trip.  He has been recalled from the Coyotes AHL affiliate in Springfield.  The Yotes acquired Thomas in a December trade with the Montreal Canadiens for Lucas Lessio.

11.  The second L.A. King goal on Saturday night was bizarre and poorly played by Louis Domingue BUT what upset me was Tanner Pearson hit him pretty hard from behind with NO CALL!  Does Gary Bettman or his officials have a clue what goaltender interference is?

12.  I must admit I’m really looking forward to watching Max Domi and OEL make magic on the Yotes PP for the next ten years.

13.  Arizona Coyotes special teams update:

PP:  14th at 18.6 down from 12th at 19.1% last week

PK:  28th at 76.4 down from 27th at 77.3% last week

14.  Countdown to the 2016 NHL Trade Deadline:  36 days (Feb. 29)

15.  Countdown to the 2016 World Cup:  237 days (Sept. 17-Oct. 1 in Toronto). How many Coyotes do you think will be in this tournament?  Hanzal?  OEL? Domi?  Duclair?  Boedker?

Arizona Hockey Talk is looking for Arizona Coyotes, ASU Sun Devils, and local minor hockey writers.  If you or somebody you know is interested, please contact us.

If you have any thoughts on any of these questions please let me know.
