Random Thoughts On The Arizona Coyotes: July 6

Things about the Arizona Coyotes and the NHL  that crossed my mind this past week –

Some random facts and a few thoughts from the past couple of weeks about the National Hockey League and our Arizona Coyotes.

1.  Arizona Coyotes GM Don Maloney has been very busy re-tooling his line-up for the 2015-16 season and it’s looking a helluva lot better than the team that finished the 2014-15 season.

2.  Remember hockey fans, the Free Agent period starts on July 1 but it doesn’t end there.  There is still a couple of months to watch players get signed.

3.  I’m an “old school” hockey observer so I like the signing of UFA forward Steve Downie.  He will definitely put a little starch in the Coyotes’ sheets.

4.  RFA forward Mikkel Boedker has filed for salary arbitration.  Hearing is to be announced at a later date.

5. The Arizona Coyotes have re-signed UFA forward Antoine Vermette and the net result for renting him out to the Chicago Blackhawks was  defenceman Klas Dahlbeck and a first-round pick that turned into Nick Merkley!  Nice work Mr. Maloney.

6. Phil Kessel is now a Pittsburgh Penguin.  He should be good for at least 40 goals per season now!  New fantasy stud?

7.  I always wondered what the saying “what’s old is new again” meant.  Now I know.  Welcome back Antoine Vermette (UFA), Zbynek Michalek (UFA), and Boyd Gordon (acquired from Edmonton for Laurie Korpikoski).

8.  Niklas Grossman, acquired in the Sam Gagner trade, should help eat up some minutes on the PK and add a presence in front of goaltender Mike Smith.

9.  Dylan Strome, the Coyotes 1st round pick this year (3rd overall), thinks he can play in the NHL this season.  Ultimately, it’s up to him to make the decision hard for the brass to send him back to junior.

10.  I would love to see Max Domi and Anthony Duclair on the same line this season.  If the Coyotes play Domi at center, who do you think should be the other winger?

11.  I wonder if Brendan Perlini is ready to challenge for a roster spot or is he destined for another year of seasoning in the OHL.

12.  I was quite surprised the Arizona Coyotes didn’t give RFA defenseman John Moore a qualifying offer but instead let him walk as a UFA.  That’s not great asset management IMO.

13.  With Antoine Vermette and Boyd Gordon back on the Coyotes roster, I would think we should have no trouble in the face-off circle.

14.  Generally, players and teams rarely get to the arbitration hearing and sign a new contract before the deadline.  The threat of the unknown usually gets each side to come to their senses. (see #4)

15.  Arizona Hockey Talk is looking for Arizona Coyotes and ASU Sun Devils writers.  If you or somebody you know is interested, please contact us.
