The Phoenix Coyotes have traded for some much needed scoring help Tuesday, on the eve of the NHL trade deadline. 

Tuesday afternoon the Phoenix Coyotes acquired forward Martin Erat from the Washington Capitals in exchange for defenseman Rostislav Klesla, forward Chris Brown and a fourth-round draft choice in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. 

Coyotes GM said “We’ve been looking at Martin for a long, long time.”  “He was really a terrific player in Nashville for a long time and we’re excited to have him.”

Erat  is expected to arrive on Wednesday and is expected to be at the team’s next practice.

MartinErat02172010Martin Erat will be joining three of his countrymen from Czech Republic; forwards Martin Hanzal and Radim Vrbata as well as defenseman Zbynek Michalek.

It is expected that Erat will play on the left wing on a line with Martin Hanzal and RadimVrbata.

Erat has played with Hanzal and Vrbata for Czech Republic at past IIHF World Championships and with Hanzal at last month’s Olympics. 

The NHL tradeline is at 1pm Arizona time and GM Don Maloney said “We’d like to add another NHL forward, maybe a defenseman too.”

The Coyotes also acquired forward John Mitchell in the deal for Erat.  Mitchell will be assigned to the team’s American Hockey League affiliate in Portland, Maine.

Earlier in the day, the Coyotes traded defensemen David Rundblad and Mathieu Brisebois to the Chicago Blackhawks for a second-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.
